In Russian history many undertakings, which later on turned into geopolitical, economic, scien-tific achievements of world significance, were made by fanatic-enthusiasts, very often with absolute indifference of our state and in the best case with passive support.
In connection with this in mind comes one real episode from life of our remarkable compatriot, outstanding polar researcher, whose 100anniversary was celebrated by the whole scientific Arctic and Antarctic society (on our initiative). In far 30ties in connection with USA pretension to occupy Wrangle Island there appeared necessity in colonization of this island. In 1925 Georgiy Alekseevich appealed to state official with the following suggestion:
In early June of this year I appealed to you by telegraph with request to send me to work on Kamchatka. In late October on my arrival to Khabarovsk orally I repeated my request about sending me to the North. The question was left without answer. It seems to me that my re-quest left an impression of action, made carelessly, fed by child’s romanticism. I want to prove you that my decision is deeply considered.
I have decided to devote my life to research of far Northeast long ago. Now the question about Wrangle Earth colonization is being solved. The aim of colonization is not so much of economic inter-est, but politic. And there also exists necessity of natural—geographic researches in this district. These tasks can be carried out by director of island, who should not only possess definite moral quali-ties, but also should understand social and political questions and also be ready for scientific research work.
It is hardly possible to send there famous scientist, taking into account office character of such people and also all difficulties of forthcoming long trip...
Territories of our North and Northeast are beyond only Wrangle’s Earth. The region will demand much time and efforts, therefore it is reasonably to send there a person, who has the whole life be-fore him, and who is able to cope with not one Wrangle’s Earth. All above mentioned makes me (again reminding that my decision is well-considered and predetermines the plan of my life) once again appeal to you with request about nomination me as a candidate for work on Wrangle’s Earth...(From letter of G.A.Ushakov to representative of Russia’s Trade Commissariat of Far East, Andrianov, December of 1925)»
That is how only enthusiasm of unknown in that time person, responsibility, which Ushakov was not afraid of and intuition of officials led to tremendous success of Russia in the Arctic pioneering. Certainly we couldn’t leave regardless such an unique person in the Arctic pioneering history as G. A. Ushakov, In February of 2001 there was the centenary of honored polar explorer, doctor of geo-graphical sciences, first governor and explorer of Wrangle’s Island, pioneer and explorer of the Northern Earth - the latest largest geographic discovery of the 20th century. Together with the family of the outstanding polar explorer we took the initiative of anniversary celebration. Already in 2000 the organizing committee began first measures on celebrations. Program of 2000-2001 included several expeditions to the Northern Earth, Ushakov’ Island, Wrangle’s Island, Chukotka, Ushakov’s mother-land, readings and conferences, archives exhibitions, shooting of documentary film, reissue of books, issue of anniversary stamps, envelopes, etc.
It is pleasant to realize that our initiative was not left without attention of the President’s Ad-ministration and Russia’s government. Academic part of the program was held in Russian Geographic Society and Academy of Sciences. Very different ministries and departments, which deal with the Arc-tic in their work, supported and took part within their powers in program suggested by us.
